For 30 years, the Virginia International Tattoo has captivated an audience of more than 1,000,000 with a spectacular and inspirational display of music, military precision and pageantry.

The first-ever military Tattoo in the United States was ordered by Virginian George Washington. Washington famously believed that "discipline is the soul of an Army." He relied on the evening "Tattoo" to help establish discipline and ensure that soldiers returned to their quarters every night as part of an official roll call and evening ceremony. The tradition was lost over the following decades, but then in 1997, the Virginia International Tattoo was established.

Virginia International Tattoo is now the proud standard bearer of the Tattoo tradition in the United States. Our Tattoo includes aspects of General Washington's original military ceremonies as well as modern concert aesthetics, but it is so much more. It is an experience that brings out the very best in people. When we Tattoo together, we share the exquisite beauty of music and dance and international culture; we honor the extraordinary service, sacrifice and courage of the men and women who serve in our military; we recognize exceptional friendships and alliances among nations; and we celebrate the hard-won freedom that allows all of these things.

In 2027, we proudly celebrate our 30th anniversary with our greatest ever spectacle of Music and Might. The 2027 Virginia International Tattoo will not only entertain you, it will inspire your participation... from the moment that your hand touches your heart during the Star-Spangled Banner to when you jump to your feet when your family's favorite service song is played to when you rise in solemn prayer as hundreds of pipers, bandsmen and singers join in the singing of Amazing Grace.
