Having been diagnosed with a terminal heart condition, Mahler composed his Ninth Symphony, his final completed symphony, while confronting his own mortality. The emotional work takes the listener on a musical journey from the beauty of life to the tranquility of the great unknown.

One of the most beloved symphonies in the classical repertoire, Mahler's Ninth is a profoundly emotional experience. It begins in hushed awe, harp, horns and strings beckoning, and transports the listener through wave after wave of joy and sorrow, loss and redemption. Leonard Bernstein once said that listening to Mahler's Ninth is like passing through the veil to a glimpse of another realm beyond; Virginia Symphony Orchestra conductor Eric Jacobsen calls it "one of the greatest accomplishments of humanity." A must for any music lover's bucket list.
